My mom, in an effort to soothe my broken heart after some boy preferred a girl I thought was prettier than me, would often say, "Beauty is only skin-deep, but ugly is to the bone." I'm sure she was trying to make me feel better by telling me that I was a generally kinder, nicer person, but after a while, it came to feel like the thing you tell the girl who is ugly, but has a great personality. Since I don't really think I'm ugly, I think it might have been better to simply tell me I was beautiful as well.
