Signed up for "Strings" in the 4th grade at Westview Elementary in Lee's Summit, MO (ca. 1971) The instrument was actually chosen for me because of my size (very tall). I was given the violin. The first couple of years, we "plucked" out Twinkle, Twinkle. I wasn't fond of dragging this violin to & from school, but did it daily despite. My parents bequeathed me my Great-Grandfathers old fiddle -spent money to upgrade it's dilapidation. I felt proud to show off this great antique! By the time I got to high school, the skeleton fell out of the closet! I was revealed when the instructor ask me to solo a small part in front of the class. I COULDN'T READ MUSIC!!!!!!!!! How did I pull off playing only by ear for this many years? I don't know, but I immediately decided that this violin was much too heavy to drag to and from school every day.

I learned to play the piano when I was 7, flute when I was 9, and guitar when I was 16. Interestingly, the only instrument that I continue to play is the piano.
