1991
Having an older brother, I usually just copied the tapes he acquired, so it was a while before I actually bought an album. The first album I copied from him was Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles. The first album I bought with my own money was Out of Time by R.E.M.
Little did I know at the time, they would quickly become my favorite band and I would rapidly buy the rest of R.E.M.'s back catalog (on tape, yes, that may date me a bit...), and though I may not listen to them as religiously as I once did, but they're still number one in my book.

Not positive, but I remember buying an Elton John album (Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy) with my own cash. It was released in 1975 - I was 12 or 13 - so that sounds about right.
