October 12, 1990 • Fort Dix, Bldg 3452, Fort Dix, NJ 08640, USA 2nd Platoon (MUSTANGS!) Charlie Company, 2/26 Infantry. Lots of tears. Segregation and synced cycles. Push-ups. Goose shit. Push-ups. Fraternization. Bitter cold. Push-ups. Cake and CS gas. Push-ups. A day chatting with the males across the street. Push-ups. Embezzlement. Push-ups. Pissing my pants. Losing most of my hand-to-hand fights (but still being the smartest soldier in the battalion). Push-ups.

July 13, 2003 • Killeen, TX, USA It was at this Chinese buffet restaurant whose name I can't remember--and the whole damned battalion (and Sandor Maroszan) showed up. I was floored. And honored to serve with them. It was hard to say goodbye, especially when they were preparing to go to Iraq.

My assignment to the 1st Cavalry Division. That's where my career went to die. Despite all of the nice people I worked for/with and it was a good unit, I was the most unhappy. It was right after 9/11, so the whole country took an unexpected turn. My relationship ended via answering machine. One of my friends ate his gun. I got fat, too. I also became a diabetic in a large way. My first opportunity to be directly involved in a major conflict, and I couldn't go.
Yet I'm a member of the 1st Cavalry Division Association. Go figure.

August 25, 1993 • Anjung-ri, Anjung-eup, Pyeongtaek-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea It was pretty good. Except for PLDC, but that's not supposed to be good (and I managed to alienate everyone. EVERYONE). However, I befriended a combat engineer out of that named Todd Pennington.

September 25, 1996 • Anjung-ri, Anjung-eup, Pyeongtaek-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea Oddly, I can't remember much of this second tour. I think I had to stand in front of the Old Man for something.

January 13, 1992 • Goodfellow AFB, TX 76908, USA I remember at the time the location wasn't exactly diverse, and the Rodney King riots happened, so it was not exactly comfortable for me. I was rather immature and naive as well, which didn't help with the...politics (meaning that some of the instructors seemingly did not personally like me).

Melody Conner (RIP) and Shelly Berner. Melody was every bit a country girl--outspoken, daring, and went for what she wanted despite any limitations people told her she had. And she was loyal to me to the end, something I took for granted at times. I have found no truer friend as of yet.
Shelly is one of the kindest people I know. She would give you the shirt off her back if you needed it, and is selfless, giving most of her time to the care of her late father, her mother, and her sister as well as her friends. She tends Melody's resting place. I am forever grateful that I was a part of her life because I feel that she made both me and Melody better people knowing her.

East Carteret High School, 3263 US Highway 70 E, Beaufort, NC 28516-7897, USA My senior prom date was Lemuel Murray. He was (and is) a very nice guy. I cannot say the same for myself at that time. AND I wore a repurposed strapless dress with poor foundation garments. Not pretty.
