Figure skater Tonya Harding's ex-husband attacked competitor Nancy Kerrigan with a metal club. The U.S. National Championships were the following day, but Kerrigan could not compete due to the injury to her knee. Kerrigan did however skate in the Winter Olympics two months later and earned herself a silver medal.

Oslo, Norway

Famous painting The Scream by Edvard Munch disappeared from a museum in Oslo and was replaced with a note saying, "Thousand thanks for the bad security!".

Rwanda

The Hutus began exterminating the Tutsi population of Rwanda. No country would come to Rwanda's aid while 800,000 Tutsi were murdered.

Nirvana's lead singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain committed suicide. Nirvana popularized grunge and alternative rock music in the early 1990s and Cobain became an icon for all of Generation X.
