After 100 days, the writers' strike came to an end. The Writer's Guild of America (WGA) on both coasts organized the strike, demanding compensation for movies, TV shows, etc that were available on new media either by downloading or streaming content.

Swimmer Michael Phelps won 8 gold medals at the summer Olympics and surpassed swimmer Mark Spitz's record of most gold medals at a single game (7 gold medals at the Munich games in 1972). Combined with the 8 gold and bronze he won at Athens in 2004, Phelps held the second highest world record for total medals won. (Soviet gymnast Larissa Latynina had 18).
