British actor Pete Postlethwaite, nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in In the Name of the Father and widely recognized for his roles in Amistad, The Usual Suspects, The Constant Gardener, and Rome+Juliet, passed away from cancer.

World War II hero Richard Winters passed away. He commanded the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion, Easy Company, who dropped onto Normandy, France on D-Day, fought the Battle of the Bulge, and took Adolf Hitler's Eagles Nest retreat. Easy Company inspired the HBO mini-series Band of Brothers, which was produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak resigned after two and a half weeks of protests against his corrupt government, which was in power for three decades.

Japan
A 9.0-magnitude earthquake (the fourth largest in over 100 years) shook the northeast region of Japan and created a tsunami. Over 10,000 people died and nearly 13,000 went missing. The earthquake and tsunami damaged Japanese nuclear plants and the effects of radiation exposure remain to be seen.

Iconic actress Elizabeth Taylor passed away from congestive heart failure. She was well known for her roles in National Velvet, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and Cleopatra. She won two Oscars for her performances in Butterfield 8 and Who's Afraid of Virignia Woolf?. Besides her captivating violet eyes and commanding on-screen presence, Taylor was also known for her personal life (she was married eight times) and the founding of the American Foundation for AIDS Research.
